“Topper”
Day 155, #2026bigyearproject
Long and flowing or cropped closely? Braid, bun, pony, clip. Sometimes the strands look like escapees fleeing a horrific scene. Now and then, my fur settles down and behaves like cooperative students lined up for the lunch room.
I admire those who have mad skills with hair. Their locks epitomize the idea of one’s crowning glory. Whether they lead an intense biz meeting, walk a red carpet, referee a kids’ soccer game, or meet chums for brunch, their coiffure is meticulously styled yet casually elegant.
Summer is coming. Events are scheduled. There will be many photo opportunities. It would be awesome if I could present myself and look sort of put-together. Outfits are assembled haphazardly on a daily basis: Leggings, mostly black, pair with t-shirts and a hoodie finishes the ensemble if it is chilly. Voilá! The Devil wears Prada. I wear Costco.
When circumstances demand a bit more thought and creativity, I make an effort to put on appropriate clothing. Really. Most of the time. Well, as often as I go to fancy gigs, my stock of glamorous frocks is rather limited. If I were to peruse photos from various weddings, funerals, and celebrations, my costumes would not vary much.
I like what I like.
Is there a big difference between timeless fashion pieces and items that have become staples?
I trimmed down my closet to half its contents a few years ago. Now that I no longer perform as a professional musician, I donated many wide skirts and silky tops. Once I left the corporate world, suits and stockings beat a hasty retreat. During the Pandemic, my selection of soft, comfortable nightgowns and pajamas probably tripled. Can you tell my lifestyle from the garments I own?
A great haircut can instantly make one’s appearance more presentable. A visit to my favorite stylist is overdue.
I hope my smile is the accessory I need to pull everything together.
Maybe I should also invest in more chic hats?

Boy, Jo-Jo, I can certainly identify with all you wrote!!!!! Especially the way your wardrobe consists of “staples”. Over the years I’ve reclassified them as “classics”. It just sounds better (and still fashionable) to me.❤️
