“Standing Beside Us”
Day 33, #2026bigyearproject
There are kind souls who stand beside us when we walk through those fabled shadowed valleys. They are there to clasp our hands if our steps are hesitant. Their good wishes give us strength, even when their physical presence is absent. When we feel triumph, joy, or relief, they amplify our emotions because they share them.
My uncle and aunt have been part of my life since I was about seven or eight years old. They were married 64 years, almost my whole existence. I have been able to lean on their support, count on their encouragement, and learn from their example.
Today and tomorrow, we will honor my uncle’s memory. He had ninety years to serve others and take care of his wife, children, and grandkids.
I heard that the wonderful father of one of our friends passed away yesterday. He was 90, like my uncle. Perhaps they will meet in Heaven and discover that they had overlapping circles.
In honor of both these incredible souls, I would like to share a poem I wrote for twins on their baptism day. It feels as though it fits both these gentle souls as well.
Uncle Carling and Papa Louie, may you rest in Paradise.

“Baptism”
by Jo-Jo Tabayoyong Murphy
Our world needed healing.
God sent two of you to ease our hearts.
Strangers meet the eyes of a pair of happy babies
And they walk on as though a benediction has been given.
When hearts felt empty,
Tiny ones opened their arms and
Encircled us.
We were comforted.
When you cried or giggled,
Or asked for cuddles,
We had a chance to return the favor.
God’s timing is perfect.
God anticipated our needs.
God foresaw your ability to shine golden light in shadowy corners.
How will you serve God?
What is your purpose?
You already make a positive impact.
May your many gifts be revealed as the years go by.
We are grateful for your presence.
We pray for your future.
We are blessed to know you.

Such a beautiful poem and, Jo-Jo, you are one of the kind people you described.
