A friend met me and my husband in person for the first time last week. She mentioned to us both, at separate times, that she noticed that he looked at me with great affection while I spoke. What a lovely observation to hear!
These snapshots were taken at moments when we were unaware of the person photographing us. They are among my favorite life scenes.
From the upper left, in clockwise order:
• When our daughter graduated from college, we felt all the typical parental emotions of love, pride, excitement, delight, and gratitude. My husband’s gaze held all of those in one expression.
• The Dad’s Wedding Speech was a responsibility that my darling dear took to heart. He does not enjoy having all eyes - and ears - focused on him. He need not have worried. His words were carefully chosen, sincere, and entertaining. I was thrilled for him when our guests responded to his message with enthusiasm. I am so grateful to the one who sent us this memento.
• During the wedding rehearsal, our girl carried a bouquet made with the ribbons from her bridal shower gifts. She was radiant. Her dad was serious about practicing his part. I was touched by the affectionate glance she gave him as they marched. I knew they would reassure each other as they walked toward the altar.
• I never knew how much I would adore my child. Heaps of books, classes, advice, and lore exist to help parents prepare for their vital roles. I studied the essays of experts, spoke to experienced moms, and learned whatever I could before our baby arrived. As soon as she opened her eyes, I was smitten. Every big and little step in her development feels miraculous. I have been in awe of her since that introduction in the delivery room. When I look at this picture, all that giddiness comes back.
Two milestones and one ordinary day. Three of us. Unmistakable, unending love.
